I'm so busy with your first grader that I am unable to answer my phone during school hours. If you need to get a message to me or your student, just give the front office a call. If you leave a message or email, I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Bus/Pick Up Notes
If your child will have a change in his or her typical after school schedule, it is essential that you write me a note, or call the office so I can make sure your first grader gets home the right way.
- Students may not ride a bus home with a friend.
If I do not have a note from you or the office specifying the change, I will send your child home according to the usual routine.
Masks
Masks must be worn at all times inside and outside of the school.
Birthdays
Although we do not celebrate with birthday treats from home, we have a special birthday song moment with help from our puppets Big Blue or Quackers.
Snack
Snacks are allowed at first recess at. Please bring a water bottle!
Recess
Your child will have recess every day. Please make sure that he or she has appropriate clothing for hot and cold temperatures, and raincoats for the rain. No umbrellas please.
Homework
I don’t want your entire evening spent doing homework but consistent practice helps children develop their skills.
Please note:
•Students are asked to complete 15 minutes of reading a night out loud to an adult who can encourage, correct and help the student practice reading fluency.
Blue Take Home Folders
The folders are labeled “Take Home Folder” and will be sent home each day containing your child’s school work for the day. Please return the empty folder to school with your child each day.
Management/Discipline
All students at Durham are expected to be Respectful, Responsible, and Safe. As a class, we continually celebrate these behaviors as a means of promoting a caring environment, conducive to learning. I believe in caring, respectful classroom, with structure where students are allowed to make good choices. I use a variety of management strategies such as PAX tickets, Love and Logic, PAX Good Behavior Program, Responsive Classroom and preventative redirection.

Toys
I realized that with the small amount of time most kids spent in school during Kindergarten, they may not know that toys and trading cards are not allowed at school. We had a great talk on Friday about how those things stay at home. Please help your first grader by encouraging them to leave things not needed for school at home where they will be safe, and ready to play with when they return.
Writing
Our genre focus is opinion writing and students have begun writing opinion pieces in class. The Common Core State Standards being taught include:
- State an opinion and supply a reason for that opinion (W.1.1)
- Use correct grammar when writing (L.1.1)
- Print all upper and lowercase letters legibly with proper spacing (L.1.1.a)
- Use correct capitalization and punctuation (L.1.2*)
- Use correct spelling of known words and phonetic spelling of untaught words, when writing (L.1.2**)
